Chapter 1 — “Another World”

Re; A Hero’s New Life in a New World!

Chapter 1 — “Another World”

Arc 1 Beginning

    “…Baru.”

    “…Subaru.”

    “…You must save him.”

    “…You must protect him.”

    “…Please…”

    “…Help Subaru.”

    “…Subaru Natsuki.”

    “—What just happened?”

He opened his eyes. When he did, he found himself in the middle of a city full of Humans, Demi-Humans, and large animals that resembled Dragons. He was bewildered. He was confused.

“One second I was fighting Goblins, the other second, I… end up here.”

He was about eighteen years-of-age, and roughly one-hundred-eighty centimeters tall. Among the other residents in the city, he was now in, he did not stand out.

He had spiky red hair, blue eyes, and a well-built body. He wore armor that covered his legs, chest, and his shoulders. He also wore a long and wide red cape, which extended up to his feet. Finally, he had a scabbard by his hips, which carried his sword.

“No matter how I look at it, I’m in a different world. Demi-Humans don’t exist in my world. They were simply fictional beings made for stories.”

There were others that wore attire that was similar to his. They seemed to have some power over the people.

“This place is also too real to be a dream. But anyway, ‘Protect Subaru,’ huh. I’m assuming that someone summoned me here for that purpose. There’s just one problem, though… Who’s Subaru?”

  A woman walks past him.

“E–Excuse me. Can I talk to you for a second?”

She stops walking and turns around to face him. “Okay, good. We speak the same language here,” he thought to himself.

“I’m a little lost. Could you help me?”

“Lost? Aren’t you a knight? Knights were supposed to be trained to learn their way around this large city.”

    “N–No, I’m… not a knight.”

“Hm? How come you’re dressed like that, then?”

“There’s no way she’s going to believe that I’ve been transported here from another world,” he thought to himself. “I’ll just have to lie, to not seem suspicious.”

“I have amnesia, so I don’t really know much.”

“Oh, you poor boy. I’m Vanessa Enoteca, nice to meet you. Do you at least remember your name?”

Vanessa was about a few centimeters shorter than the boy. She possessed long, wavy pink haired which was loose in a lob style, and purple irises.

She wore a slim, sleeveless, fit, red-violet top and miniskirt with red-violet evening gloves. The cups that held her breasts had curvy edges. Her miniskirt was very short and only covered her buttocks. She also wore dark purple stockings and garter belts underneath her boots.

Her thigh-high red-violet boots were skin tight and split at the collars, creating a V-shape. She wore a reddish-violet hat with a conical crown, which fell onto one side near the end. Additionally, the hat had a purple ribbon surrounding its circumference with a pin of intricate design attached to it, and a very wide brim.

She also wore a black capelet with a bull’s head sewn on it.

“My name is Justice Hendricks. I do remember a few things, but I’m still clueless about most things, such as the name of this place.”

“Well, we’re in the Kingdom of Lugnica. This city—called ‘Lugnica’—is the capital of the Kingdom. This city is divided into five layers which are also known as districts, with the highest and first layer being the royalty layer, second layer for the nobility, third layer for economic and commercial reasons, fourth layer for the average citizen and the lowest layer for the poor, which is also known as the Poor District.”

    “Ah.”

“The people over there, wearing white uniforms are Knights, they devoted their lives to protecting the people of this country. They also patrol this city, looking for people who break the law.”

“I see. Thank you for the information. I’m holding you back from going somewhere, aren’t I? I’m sorry, I’ll leave you alone.”

“No, it’s fine. Today’s my day off and I have this entire day to myself, I was actually looking for something to kill my time.”

Justice noticed Vanessa reaching for something in her bag. Her hands were filled with small gold coins.

“We use Gold Coins as a form of currency. One of them could buy you a fruit, but that’s all. Sacred Gold Coins are worth One-Hundred regular Gold Coins. Here.”

She extended her hand—which had many Gold Coins, and a few Sacred Gold Coins on it—and offered them to Justice.

“H–Huh? No thank you! You don’t need to pity me and give me money. Plus, you need the money to survive, don’t you?”

“It’s okay. Just take the money. I have a job, so giving away some of my earnings is something I’m free to do. You, on the other hand, don’t seem to have one. You need the money more than I do.”

“No, really, it’s okay, I don’t need the money.”

    “Nonsense!”

She opened the pockets in Justice’s pants and put the coins in.

“Ah! You also have to learn about Magic and Divine Protections! Just because you have a sword doesn’t mean that’s the only thing that’ll help you in battle. Ahem. In the distant past, Magic was made up of Six Elements, which were Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Yin, and Yang. Nowadays, there are many types of Magic.”

“I know about Magic,” Justice said. He looked at his hand. A few moments later, his entire arm was on fire. Yes, the boy was using Magic, Fire Magic to be exact. “But…  I don’t know what Divine Protections are,” he continued.

“Divine Protections are blessings given to people at birth by the world Some races have a Divine Protection that is always given to members of that race. Most people are born without any Divine Protection, and those who are born with it know of their own Divine Protection without being told.”

“I can’t thank you enough for giving me all this information. If you don’t mind me asking, do you have a Divine Protection?”

“No problem! And, yes, I do. I have the Divine Protection of Destiny. With it, I can Manipulate someone’s destiny. But… I don’t know how to use it. I can’t just use it like I can use Magic, I need to complete a certain task to be able to use it… I don’t know what the task is.”

“I wish I could help you find that task. But I still remember that I have to find someone. Hopefully, we can see each other again, in the future.”

“I could help you locate that person. What is their name?”

Justice tried to remember what the voice said.

    “Subaru. Subaru Natsuki.”

“Nope. I don’t know any Subarus. Do you remember what they look like, by chance?”

    “No, sorry, I don’t.”

“Hmm. Follow me, then. One of my close friends might know the person you need to find.”

While Justice was following Vanessa to wherever she was leading him to, he saw dirt-covered children steal food from shops. He decided to not do anything about it, because, back in his world, many children—including him—had to resort to thievery to support themselves, or their family members.

“So, Vanessa, what is your job?”

“I’m a Knight. I’m off-duty today, which is why I’m not chasing after all the children who were stealing from the shops.”

“Is your job tough? I think it is. What with having to risk your life to save others.”

“When you get sent on dangerous missions, then yeah, it’s tough. It’s still a refreshing job because there are times when people need a ‘Thank You’ from other people. Plus, the money they pay is worth risking your life!”

“Oh. What kind of missions are you sent o—”

—Someone bumps into Justice and falls down. Judging from the sound that person made when they fell down, it was easy to tell that they were a girl—or just possessed a very feminine sounding voice. They were wearing a red cape with a hoodie on it. The cape covered their entire body and the hoodie covered their hair, but not their face.

They had a rosy complexion and silver eyes.

    “Ah, sorry.”

Justice extends his hand to the fallen person, offering to help them get up. They grab onto his hand and get up.

“I should be the one saying that.”

Vanessa gave the person a weird look.

“U–Um… is there anything on my face?”

“No… I feel like I know you. What’s your name?”

    “Ruby Rose, yours?”

“Vanessa Enoteca. Your last name is Rose… I don’t think I know you, but, are you, by chance, related to Summer Rose?”

“Yes, I am. She was my mother… Anyway, I have to leave, or else I might be late for a meeting! Nice meeting you guys! Bye!”

The young girl dashed off, extremely fast. Her speed certainly impressed Justice and Vanessa. However, they still continued to walk. Vanessa leading Justice, who was following her without asking any more questions.

     “Aaand, we’re here.”

They stopped in front of a bar. Above the door had some writing on it, Justice wasn’t able to read the writing. They may talk in the same language as his world, but that didn’t necessarily mean that they wrote the same way they did in his world.

Justice kept on staring at the symbols, which made nearby people think that he was a “weirdo.” Vanessa notices this too.

“The sign says ‘Etox Bar.’ I’m assuming that the amnesia made you forget how to read?”

    “Y…Yeah.”

    “Oh well! Let’s go in.”

When Justice and Vanessa entered the bar, the former was unnerved by the toxic smell, which came from the Alchohol the people were drinking. Speaking of the people, there were many bulky men staring at the two, which caused Justice to be intimidated a little, in contrast to Vanessa who kept a calm and composed face.

“Excuse me, everyone! My friend is looking for someone named Natsuki Subaru! If you know where they are, please tell us!”

Due to Vanessa screaming that, the entire bar stared at the two. One of the bulky men raised his arm into the air.

“A boy named ‘Subaru Natsuki’ wandered into here, thinking it was a Resturant. He had black hair, and wore something called a ‘tracksuit.’ He kept on mumbling to himself that he ‘should head to the poor district, already.’ I think that’s where he went.”

“Do you know how to get to the Poor District?”

“Yeah, after leaving the bar, just take a right and keep on heading forward.”

    “Thanks—!”

Justice left the bar and started to run towards the Poor District.

“If I can find this guy, maybe he could tell me about why I was summoned here.”

    “Justice!”

He stopped running and turned around. He saw the beautiful pink-haired woman standing with a smile.

     “I’m coming with you.”

     Justice smiles back.

     “Alright!”

The two began to run as fast as they could to the Poor District, in hope of finding the man named ‘Subaru Natsuki.’ “Follow me,” she said, once more. “I know the shortest route to the Poor District,” was what she followed up with. While they were still running, Justice decided to ask Vanessa one more question.

     “Vanessa… ”

     “Hmm?”

     “Why are you helping me?”

She smiled again and closed her eyes. Her cheeks, blushing with redness. “Because…,” she said. “…You’re interesting.”

Before the two could reach the District, they stopped walking. They saw a crowd of people jamming up the road in front of them. Naturally, they went to check what all the commotion was about. The crowd was blocking their line of sight, but they were certain that some kind of violence was in progress.

The two pushed through the crowd, forcefully thrusting their bodies in.

“Someone call a Knight!”

When the two managed to push through the crowd, they were finally able to see what was happening. There were some thugs, at their feet was a boy who had been beaten so badly he looked like a crumpled rag.

“This punk got food all over my shirt! He fucking deserved it!”

Apparently, the boy had passed out after being brutalized for so long, but he still looked like he was breathing.

“I’m going to do something,” Justice mumbled to himself, as he clenched the sheath of his sword.

    “—That’s enough.”

     Everything went silent.

     “Is that him?

     “It’s definitely him.”

     “The boy is saved.”

Everyone began to mutter, as someone—presumably a Knight—walked through the crowd. All eyes were on the person that just appeared. It was a young man. He appeared to be very handsome. He possessed red hair that most would describe as “Flaming,”  and blue eyes that resembled the color of the sky.

The thugs were intimidated by the man, but they tried to not show it.

“Just because yer the Sword Saint doesn’t mean we’ll go easy on ya’!”

“So you guys still intend to fight, huh?”

The boss-like man flushed red and clenched his fist—and then he collapsed limply to the ground. The young man had unleashed a punch so fast, that no one was able to see it coming.

“Do you all still wish to fight?”

They backed several steps off and chorused an apology. “I’m not the one you should be apologizing to,” he said. The men grabbed their unconscious colleague and fled. The young man did not bother watching them and instead went over to the fallen boy. He lifted up the boy’s head and poured a blue potion in his mouth. Immediately some of the colors returned to the boy’s face.

“I must ask everyone to go back to what they were initially doing. Us Knights will handle the situation.”

Once Vanessa was finished screaming that, all of the bystanders walked away from the scene. A few more Knights came to the area.

“Please take the boy to the temple,” the young man said. “He’s been critically injured, but I’ve used a potion on him, so he should be fine. I still hope you’ll take him to the temple for a checkup, for safety’s sake.”

     “Right.”

They picked the boy up and took him to the temple.

“Vanessa, has your day been going well?”

“Oh, yes it has. Thanks for asking, Reinhard.”

“You’re off-duty today, aren’t you? What have you been doing?”

She pointed at Justice, and said: “I’m trying to help him find someone.” Reinhard walked up to him and shook his hands.

“I’m Reinhard van Astrea, a pleasure to meet you.”

“I’m Justice Hendricks, it’s nice to meet you too.”

Vanessa put her hand on her chin and looked at both of them.

“Are you guys related? You both have red hair and blue eyes.”

“I don’t have any siblings, and as far as I know, I don’t have any red-haired cousins.”

“Well, I have amnesia, so I don’t know.”

“Oh, you do? Vanessa told me that you were looking for someone, though.”

“I only remember my name, age, how to use Magic, and someone that I’m supposed to protect. Have you met anyone named ‘Subaru Natsuki’? He’s the person I need to protect, but I don’t know what he looks like.”

“Ah, yes I do. I saved him from some thugs a little bit ago. He had black hair and wore something he called a ‘tracksuit’. He didn’t seem like he was from this country.”

“Do you know where he is right now? If so, could you lead us to where he is?”

Reinhard shook his head and answered with “He told me to look for a girl with Silver Hair,” he continued with “I’m busy with that, as of now. But, I heard him mutter to himself that he’s going somewhere called the ‘Loot House,’ if that helps.”

“—Justice, the Loot House is in the Poor District. I’m sure we can find him. Let’s go.”

“Ah, let’s! Oh, and thank you, Mister Reinhard.”

“You’re welcome. You don’t need to be formal and add ‘Mister,’ Justice.”

“I’ll remember that next time!”

The two began to run as fast as they could to the Poor District. Once again, Justice was following Vanessa, who seemingly knew her way to the District.

End.
